She's SURE!
She’s so…SURE.
And today at the hair place when the stylist asked brightly, “So, what are we doing today?” my daughter put her little hand to her chin and replied without hesitation, “I want it like THIS.”
I leaned in, “Oh, honey. Are you sure? You won’t be able to have piggies. Or braids. Maybe keep it past your shoulders at least.”
She looked back at me decidedly, “Momma. I’m sure.”
So, I stepped away and watched as six inches of blonde hair fell to the floor.
She’s ALWAYS been sure.
Her favorite color is pink, pink, and more pink which she wears head to toe in the most interesting combinations.
She puts jeans under dresses so she can race across the monkey bars or climb the wrong way up the slide.
She loves babies and my old hand-me-down Barbies, and she keeps a row of Hot Wheels lined up next to her rock collection on a shelf.
She prefers Amazing World of Gumball or SpongeBob to any Disney princess cartoons.
She uses words like ‘absolutely’ and ‘definitely’ and ‘basically’ and ‘especially.’
And sometimes when her brothers tease, she balls up a fist and plants it firmly at her waist as she pops her little hip and shouts, “That’s ENOUGH, boys. STOP. No more teasing!!” with the perfect combination of toughness and sass.
She’s just…SURE.
Sometimes I can’t quite believe she’s mine because I can be so UN-sure.
Today I marveled as the stylist swiveled my daughter’s chair toward the mirror and asked, “Well. What do you think, hon?”
And my confident girl took one look, turning her head side to side, and answered with a wide, sure smile…
“There. I look JUST like me. NOW I look like Lizzy.”
And she does.
She looks just like her.
Then she skipped ahead to the car holding a bright pink balloon with her chin-length hair bouncing.
She’s so…SURE.
And I’m pretty sure I have a lot to learn from a girl like that.
