Hey there! I’m Mikala—a family doctor, wife, mother of 5, well-being advocate, and author of the books Ordinary on Purpose and Everything I Wish I Could Tell You About Midlife. Each month my writing reaches millions of women, but I am thrilled to be connecting with YOU. I’m truly grateful to have you here!

Take a Break

Take a Break

It’s Spring Break, and I had every intention of having a few fun ‘staycation’ days with my kids. Something like a Zoo Day and an afternoon at the Aquarium and maybe a few hours swimming at the rec center.

But then it snowed. And I remembered how I am reeeeeaaaaally tired. And the car needed an oil change. And I have to catch up on laundry before we head out of town for a basketball tournament on Thursday. Plus, I’m supposed to be writing a book.

It’s already Tuesday and we haven’t had a ‘day’ of anything.

I did help the kids make blueberry pancakes this morning. And we ate up the chocolate chip cookies we baked yesterday afternoon. They stayed in their pajamas all day and alternated between hollering at each other over video games and bickering back and forth in the snow (apparently they created something called Everything Snow Ball—a combination of soccer and basketball and football that involves tackling, dunking, and juuuuust the littlest bit of tears).

I was feeling guilty we haven’t really DONE anything over Spring Break.

But then I took this picture.

Snowflakes and pajamas and Everything Snow Ball and smiles and chili on the stove with cornbread in the oven and art projects and cookie crumbs sprinkled across the kitchen table…

And I realized they’re fine. The kids are fine!

Huh. Who knew?!?

It’s all fine! And we’re actually taking a BREAK over Spring Break.
