Hey there! I’m Mikala—a family doctor, wife, mother of 5, well-being advocate, and author of the books Ordinary on Purpose and Everything I Wish I Could Tell You About Midlife. Each month my writing reaches millions of women, but I am thrilled to be connecting with YOU. I’m truly grateful to have you here!

More Than a Game

More Than a Game

Once upon a time, I didn’t watch the Super Bowl.

I was too busy chasing toddlers and changing diapers and breaking up sibling squabbles.

But I’d still put out yummy bean dips or jalapeño poppers on the table and try to create a fun party. Then my little ones would complain “it’s too spicy!!!!” so I’d have to make peanut butter and jellies in their place.

And for YEARS I thought, “Why do I even try????”

(Like I’ve also said about family vacations and roadtrips and special holiday traditions)

But this morning my teenager said, “Hey, mom. You’re gonna get a lot of food and dips and stuff and make a big deal for the Super Bowl like we always do, right???”

Then he skipped going over to watch the game with his friends so he could stay home.

With US.

Now we’re all sitting around eating yummy dips and jalapeño poppers while watching the game and cheering for touchdowns and laughing at commercials together.

And I’m soaking in this time with my now hilarious and fun bigger kids!

Young mommas, take heart. One day you’ll understand why you spent years missing the game and still trying to create a fun party.

(Or planning family vacations or roadtrips or special holiday traditions)

Because one day you’ll get to enjoy EVERY minute with your now bigger people and realize it’s about so much more than the game.
